Your Experience Could Be a Fit for Salon Ownership
What Does It Actually Take to Own a Salon?
One of the biggest misconceptions about salon ownership is that you need to be a hairstylist.
You don’t.
The technical side of a salon belongs in the hands of licensed professionals. The owner’s role is different: building a strong team, creating a positive culture, managing the business and making sure both employees and guests have a great experience.
That means many of the skills that translate well to salon ownership are developed outside the beauty industry.
Experience managing people, leading a retail or service business, overseeing operations, hiring and developing employees, managing budgets or building customer loyalty can all be highly relevant.
In fact, coming from another industry can bring a different perspective to the business. You don’t need to know how to formulate hair color to recognize great customer service, develop a strong manager or understand whether a business is performing well.
Salon expertise matters. But it doesn’t all have to come from the owner.
If you’ve built a career leading people, solving problems and creating strong customer experiences, you may already have some of the most important skills needed to lead a salon business.
So instead of asking, “Do I know enough about hair?” ask a better question:
“Do I know how to build a business where talented people can succeed?”
Because that’s what great salon ownership is really about.
